What do you do if you have a summer “stay-cation” during a pandemic? If you are me you do a ton of yard work and you throw in a gingerbread challenge. Since I haven’t done any curved shapes in a while, I took on something with no flat exterior surfaces that is out of this world!
I used a very large metal mixing bowl as the form to bake the upper and lower sections using a standard gingerbread recipe. Then I baked two flat circles and inner arc-shaped supports which you can see in the assembly video. What I had not anticipated is how really badly the humidity would affect the pieces. Yea, I know it is August in South Carolina and we live on the lake, but when you have your windows being replaced on the day of assembly that just takes the soggy gingerbread to a whole new level. I used hard crack cooked sugar to stiffen it up in a couple of particularly important structural places to get it to stay standing. It worked but with the continued humidity it will not last long.
The other downside to replacing windows besides a sudden spike in humidity is the flies. I had about a dozen buzzing around the kitchen and you can see them in the video. Please know that my house is not that bad on a normal day!
Looks great, Barb!
